  1. It happened once upon a time
    When in a state of siege sublime,
    That Tom Gilheaney, stout and straight,
    Prepared his pike in '98,
    And from *Drumkeerin did advance {Town on Western shores of Lough Allen, Leitrim}
    To join the gallant sons of France
    And finally equipped for war,
    He journeyed on to Castlebar,
    And there he showed good Irish play
    Before the Saxons ran away.
    With rank and file and glances long
    Unfeeling nerve and muscle strong
    Their vengeful man they did obey,
    Which crowned them victors on that day.
    Next morning for Collooney then
    He marched with the Killala men
    And victory again did smile
