  1. There was a man living in Coolmeen about five miles to the south west of Ballynacally who was great friends with two girls and was puzzled to know which of them would he have as his wife. So he said whichever one of the two had the most courage she was going to be his wife. The test he gave them was that whichever one of them would go to the church between the hours of eleven and twelve at night and get his prayer-book which he had left in a seat in the long aisle was going to be his wife.
    So one of the girls took courage and went to the church. She arrived at the church just at the stroke of twelve. When she was going out the gate with the prayer-book a man spoke to her and asked her what brought her out so late. She was not able to answer him and he said she should bring him in a journey. Not waiting for a reply he jumped upon her back and directed her to a house some distance away.
    When he landed at the house there was no water inside and he said he should get some to cook his food. Then he went to one of the rooms where the boy of the house was sleeping and he pierced his arm and drew blood from it. Then he got a small pot called a skillet and he cooked oatmeal with the blood.
