- Bird Love
There are several species of wild birds here in Ireland. The ones we know best are the robin, thrush, blackbird, wren, lark, sparrow, linnet, pigeon, crow, starling, bald-coote, tom-tit, martin, jack-daw,magpie, hawk, jay, chaffinch, goldfinch, bull-finch, water, hen, swan, crane, cormorant, wild duck, diver,teal, curlew and sea gull.
There are also several migratory birds which we know well. Some of those visit us in Summer others in winter. The sallow, cuckoo, corn-crake, may-bird and willie - wagtail come to remain with us in Summer.
The plover, diver, starling and snipe come in Winter.
Most people prefer the robin to any other bird. Tradition says when Our Lord was dying on the cross that a little robin tried to pull the thorns from his head. A drop of blood fell on the robin's breast. The stain of the blood has remained there ever(continues on next page)
