There were two tan yards in Bantry. One in Barrack Street, and another in William Street, near the "Custom Gap". Sheep-skin shoes were worn locally by some women long ago. Foot-coverings also made of sheep-skin and tan-hide was used before shoes or boots came into use.
People never wore shoes long ago except on special occasions, such as going to Mass or when visiting friends. There are accounts of people who never wore boots or shoes. The soles of their feet were as hard as a rock, so as that the sharpest article would not prick their feet. Stories are also told about people who ran through furze brakes barefooted.
The old people used to use the feet-water for quenching the ashes. Children, nowadays, are wearing shoes or sandals before they begin to walk. Perk shoes were also worn by people long ago, but are not worn at present. Mr. Hourihan and Mr. Goggin are the only people who make boots locally. The other shoemakers repair them.
