- Local Forges
There were eight forges in the parish. Johnny Lappin, Carnagilta, Henry Sherlock, Tonyclay, James Connolly Turnascay, John Lappin, Alamena, Patrick MacCarey, Senahinchey, Francis Casidy, Killycarnan, and Francis Mullen, Scotstown. Their people have been smiths for many years. The forges are situated near a cross-road or running water.
The roof is made of timber and felt. The door is make wide. The tools the smith uses are, the bellows, pliers tongs, nippers, and the anvil. The smiths work is shoeing horses and cart wheels, mending ploughs, harrows and gates. The shoeing of wheels is done outside. If a child has rickets, bathe it in forge water three times every morning before sunrise, one three successive mornings. I know no cure in the sparks that fly from the iron.(continues on next page)- Collector
