- The animals on our farm are as follows. Four cows, five calves, two pigs, two goats and an ass and 30 hens. We call the four cows names as "The Polly", "The Shorthorn", the heifer and the blue cow.
The cow-house is a long galvanized house. It is white-washed inside and outside. It is called the byre. There is a big wide door and at the top there are four stakes. The sake is a big pole settled in the ground. Around this there is a chain and this is fastened around the cows neck at the head of the byre. When people have done milking they put the sign of the cross on the cows udder. There is also an emblem branch hung in the byre for good luck.It is always lucky to milk a cow on the right side. When we are calling the hens we say "tioc,tioc" or "come, come".
It is said that the horses out long ago were as good as motor cars. The people used to travel every where on horse - back(continues on next page)
