Born at the foot or on the side of Ballyfermoyle hill in Co. Roscommon.
There is a high bush growing beside the foundation of the house where he was born.
He was called Shay mean - Reevock [underlined] but baptised James Quinn.
His mother lived in a cabin and in addition to knitting she supported herself by herding sheep for the owner of the farm on which the cabin was built. We hear nothing of his father.
When a small boy he first started to help his mother with the sheep.
One day he ran in and told her he saw a grand little brown lamb with the sheep.
"Go out and catch him" said the mother. Later on he saw a similar lamb as he thought. He ran after him and finally caught him. When he brought him in it was a Hare [underlined] he had caught. This was the first sign that he had(continues on next page)
