- (continued from previous page)Seating accomodation for the pupils in those schools consisted of a few rough boards nailed together. There was no State grants for the teachers in those schools. Each pupil was supposed to pay a few coppers per week. Slates and slate pencils were the writing materials the pupils had. The pupils were so densely packed together that exercises and copy books could not be used. School books consisted of the Primer, "Reading Made Easy", Universal Spelling Book, the reading portion of which contained the principles of politeness.Arithmetic and Irish were encourage in those schools during Bishop MacHale's time and his Irish Catechism was taught continually but when Bishop McEvilly succeeded him Irish was forbidden, and in some districts people were punished for speaking Irish. During Bishop McHale's time the teachers liked Irish to be spoken. The teachers lived in the houses near where they taught. The teachers used to sit near the fire.
