..........are supposed to make the cow yield plenty of milk the whole year round, and make the milk yield plenty of butter

........or under the churn while the butter is a making is supposed to bring luck to the churn. A mare's shoe will not do. (no title)
“A story is told of a woman who lived at Ballinarry at one times, she went to Kilmactranny Graveyard...”
.......and she dug at a grave until, she got a corpse, and she cut off a hand off it.
Every time she made a churning she put the dead person's hand into the milk an she said "Gether gether, gether all the butther o' the land, and she could have all the butter belonging to her neighbours. She also made it a point to borrow something, every time she made a churning, usually a pinch of salt. Her neighbours could not understand for a long time, why they were not getting a better return off their milk, but at length they began to doubt, that she was up to some vagary, because she never seemed to want to borrow, only when she was making a churning.
