When on the mountain top or glen
On Altars rude the Mass was said.
'Twas then Sir John defied the law,
It's bloody threats he put at naught.
And to Brittas Castle, Mass to say
A holy priest he bravely brought.
    O brave Sir John,
    The days are gone
    The terror reign you knew,
    But in freedom's light
    Now shining bright
    Limerick remembers you.
    III
But for the brave deed that he'd done
The grand Sir John was forced to fly,
    He escaped, but was betrayed
His trial was all a mock, a lie.
They said he had defied the law,
Of treason guilty he had been.
    And to satisfy their hate
They hanged him on the Gallow's Green.
    O brave Sir John
    When years roll on,
    May your memory brighter grow.
    May every Gael in Inishfail
    Your hero history know.
