    Famine Times
    21st Feb; 1938
    The Famine Times lasted for part of two years, from 1946 to 1848, and it is known as "Black 47". This famine was caused by the failure of the potato crop. The people had never heard of the "blight", and when it came on their potatoes they did not know what it was. The potato was the principal food in this district of Granard, Co. Longford and when it failed the people were starving, and had to eat herbs, grass and weeds trying to keep
