  1. There was an old school in Clash, about three miles north from Castletown Bere in the Parish of Eyeries and near this school. This school was in a cabin in the summer time, and in the houses in the Winter time. The teacher's name was Kingston, and he used stay in the houses around the place every night. He got no pay for this, but the scholars used give him money once in a while. There were no seats in this school, but the children used sit on sods of turf, and they used write on slates with slate pencils. When they wanted to rub off the writing, the used lick it and rub it with their sleeves. They had school from nine o'clock in the morning until two in the evening. There was an earthen floor in it, and it was very cold. They had no fire in Winter or in Summer, because there was no fire place.
