Bird Lore.
Wild birds most common in our district are the swallow,thrush,wren,blackbird,crow,robin,sparrow,starling,woodpecker,cuckoo,hawk,corncrake,snipe and magpie.
The birds that emigrate from our district are the cuckoo,corncrake and swallow.
The cuckoo leaves in August and the swallow in September.
The swallow builds her nest in the eaves of houses.The crow builds in the tree-tops.The thrush builds in the hedge as also the blackbird,robin and sparrow.The woodpeckers build in walls.Jackdaws build in the chimney.
If anybody robs the nest or touches the eggs at all it is said the bird will leave the nest.
The blackbird lays a green egg.The crow lays a white egg.The sparrow lays a green egg..The crow lays a white egg.The sparrow lays a green egg with brown spots.The sparrow lays a small white egg with white markings.The bird stays on the eggs for three weeks.
It is said the robin came to Our Lord when He was dying on the cross and a drop of blood fell on the breast of the robin.It is said that is how(continues on next page)- Collector
