Timothy Murphy was a tailor and will be remembered by the old inhabitants of the town as Brother Murphy. Whilst able to travel he spent most of his time on the road. From Cove to Cork to the walls of Derry was only a pastime for him in his day. He carried about him as many books as he possibly could. He read a great deal but his mind was not well balanced and he got into the wrong groove of religion. In fact he had more sympathy for every religion than for his own native Catholicity I heard him say on more than one occasion over 40 years ago that he was a red rank socialist. That was a time when there was a little thought of (soc) socialism in this country. He had very shallow arguments to put forward about religions. One was that God never made any man to damn.
