- They used to call the old schools hedgeschools. There was one in my great-grandmother's barn. The name of the teacher was Mr. Best. He was a stranger and he came from Kerry. The subjects taught were reading, arithmetic, writing, and catechism. All the old people had Irish. The teacher did not sleep in the school. He used not teach any Irish. The pupils had books. They used do writing. They used have rough slates from the strand. The master and the pupils used to sit on forms around the school.
