They used to call the old schools hedgeschools. There was one in my great-grandmother's barn. The name of the teacher was Mr. Best. He was a stranger and he came from Kerry. Some of the children used give them small sums of money and others used to give them presents. He used to stay periods in each house. The subjects taught were reading, arithmetic, writing, and catechism. All the old people had Irish. The teacher did not sleep in the school. He used not teach any Irish. The pupils had books.
