  1. Bread was mostly made from oats grown in the district long ago. The flour was not made in the district. People do not remember seeing querns used, but they heard that they were greatly used before mills became common.
    Potato bread, oaten bread, and boxty bread were made. Oaten bread was made of oaten meal mixed with hot water and baked an inch thick on a griddle before the fire. Boxty was made of raw and boiled potatoes. Water was used for making oaten bread. Bread was made every day or night. There was a cross marked on top to let the hot air out. An oven was the name given to the vessel in which the bread was baked. Bread was cooked before the fire standing
