  1. Long ago shops were plentiful along the road and they were called inns. On Sundays buying was carried on and is still, groceries were the things that were bought. Long ago goods were sometimes not paid for with money, but farm produce, such as butter and eggs. Labour was often given for goods, such as, if a man did a day's work he might get a bag of potatoes, butter, or eggs.
    On New Year's Day people would not spend money, because they thought if they did, they might be spending it the whole year round. The markets were always held in the streets, and when people went to them they walked in barefooted to the end of the town, and then would sit down and put on the boots which they
