  1. In olden times people did not wear boots till they used to be big men. They went bare-footed Summer and Winter but now young children wear them when they are about 1 year old. There was a man living in Rathanna who used to load bushes in his bare-feet. In this district school children leave off their boots in Summer. Some people have diseases in their feet such as corns and chilblains. The corns are caused by light-fitting boots and the chilblains are caused by the cold weather. There was a belief with the old people that if corns were washed in hot water that washing soda would be dissolved in, it would cure them, and they believed that if parrifin oil was rubbed on chilblains it would cure them. The feet should be washed often and care should be taken not to let the nails of the toes grow long because they would grow down into the flesh and cause trouble. Boots are not made in this district but they are repaired in it.
