- In olden times the people of Ireland never wore boots only very seldom. The children of this district never wear boots from the beginning of Summer till the end. Some never wear boots at all. If people wash their feet at night they do not throw out the water until morning. They say it is very unlucky.
Boots are repaired and made in this district. There are about six shoemakers in Longford town. In the country the people mend their own boots or shoes in their spare time. Machinery has ousted the handy-craft. Wooden clogs are made and worn up to the present day with iron trimmings around them. Leather was made in this district but it is not made now. Long ago the people killed oxen and from the skin they made what is called "foalcoverors"
