"And do you not see it going up Willie Ward's hill there beyond" says Prunty. The thatcher looked but could see no funeral, the road was bare and plain to be seen. Prunty himself then looked towards it, but the funeral had vanished.
There is no mistake about he saw the apparition.
An incident that happened on the next day Sunday may help to explain the mystery.
When driving to allass with his mother on a side-car the horse took fright on the hill of Leitrim and made off. His mother jumped off the car and was killed. The horse had run up Willie Ward's hill before he got him under control.
He told the story of the funeral to his mother as soon as he came down out of the ladder, but she could not know what to make of it. He told the story to his brother and sister but they said he was mad. Every neighbour heard the story after the accident happened and understood its meaning.
