    1. Boxty Bread was in use in this district up to twenty or thirty years ago. People used to make it when the potatoes were dug in Autumn and at other times. It is scarcely ever made now. Raw potatoes used to be grated in a basin. Then the fibrous portion was squeezed, put on a bread board and mixed with flour and baked on a griddle. When eaten hot with butter, people say it tasted nicely. It was very sustaining.
    2. Long ago the old people used to make "sowens." They used to get a crock and fill a quarter of the crock with mill seeds and a couple of handfuls of oaten meal. (mill seeds are the husks of the grain returned from the mill when the oaten meal is got from the oats.) Then they used to fill up the crock with warm water and leave it to steep for a week. Then it was strained and the water was used for three purposes : -
