  1. Long ago when my grandmother, now eighty four years old, was a schoolgirl the majority of houses were mud-walled, the material of the walls consisting of clay, cut straw and water worked together until the mixture was almost of the consistency of wax: this mixture was called "striven" (i short). Sometimes the foundation and the first few feet of the wall were of stone and "striven", the remainder of the wall being of "striven" alone. The walls were over two feet in thickness.
The windows had two or four panes of glass and were very small. Instead of a window some of the really old windows had a wooden shutter. Occasionally there was no window in these older houses and when the outer door was shut the chimney was the only source of natural light.
The gables were hipped. The couples and rafters were of bog-oak, very roughly dressed, and were very heavy - hence the need for thick walls.
