  1. This story was obtained from Mick Heffernan Monaboula. There was an old man living not far from here. He dreamt there was a crock of gold buried at Massey's cross. He went into Mick Heffernan's house and he told them there was a crock of gold at Massey's cross as shure as there was sixpence on the pier of the gate. They went out to see was he telling the truth and they found the sixpence. They came in and prepared to go in search of the gold. They got a gun, a pick, spades and shovels, and went away. They reached the cross about 11:45 p.m. They made a ring of holy water all round the place. They saw a tall man and they went inside the ditch from him. After a while he went away. They came out and began to dig for the gold till they came to a flag. They heard the roaring of a bull and the bull came up to the ring of holy water and would come no farther. The bull began tearing up the ground. There were sods flying and one of them hit one of the men and he fell into the hole. A funeral came and passed into Stagdale. He who fell into the hole soon got into a deep sleep and had some very strange dreams. The others ran home as quickly as they possibly could. When the other man woke up in the morning he was very weak, and after a long struggling reached home.
