- In olden times many of the houses were thatched. There were certain men who used to thatch houses or repair the thatch if necessary. There were two thatchers in this townland
Pat Byrnes ("Thatch" Byrnes) and his son Pat. They thatched all the houses round Newtown and Cregaune. They are both dead now and people thatch their own houses. (The thatched houses are very few now). Long ago the houses were thatched with wheaten reed and scollops.Michael Griffin was another thatcher. He sued to buy the thatch from the people in Corcamore.

- Baskets were made with rushes got near trenches. They used to weave them to-gether and put handles on them. Larger baskets were made for carrying potatoes to & from the pits. These were tied with a sugán and carried round the neck.
