- We have a churn at home. It is about two feet high. The sides are round and it is forty years old. It has a square opening at the top. Inside are beaters to make the butter and at the end is a handle to revolve the beaters. The churn stands on four legs.Butter is made twice weekly in Summer and once a week in the Winter.My mother used to make the butter and if anybody came in during the process they were made take a turn at the churning in order they would not take the butter. The churn dash is moved upwards and downwards.When the butter is made it is taken out on to pecks with patties, then washed and salted.Butter milk is a wholesome drink. It was drunk or given to the calves or pigs.Bridie Neville
