  1. At the present day four graveyards are still in use in the parish of Clonmeen. One at Lyre R.C. Church, and another at Kilcorney R.C.Chirch. These are comparatively new, and very well kept. A second graveyard at Kilcorney is situated at "Shanakiel", is very old, and few burials take place there now. The local graveyard is situated at Clonmeen, Banteer. This too is very old, and very neglected, but still in use. Here stood the Monastery of St Furzey, the western wall of which, may still be seen. The Protestant Church now stands on the site of the old monastery, on a height, in the centre of the graveyard. The foundation of the old Monastery, supplied the stones (at the Northern side) for a new wall built round the graveyard some thirty years ago.
    The plot, with a right of way to the new Protestant Church, was sold by the "Church Body of England", and Mr Swansea was minister at the time. Father Edward Joseph Murphy, P.P. Clonmeen told Canon Morrissey, later appointed P P (1882) of Clonmeen, that the gate used to be locked against "Catholic Burial". The remains of some Catholic from "Gortinore", Banteer, were brought for burial here, and the gate was locked before the funeral. The relatives however broke the lock, and the gate, which was never locked afterwards. The Protestants used to ring the bell from the old Monastery Wall still standing, until
