1. Strange Stories - The Eel of Garadice Lake

   Fiction might pale before some of the following stories, still they are true. So said John Maxwell in continuing our Folklore talks. Over sixty years ago John Ketterick and his son Philip (Patrick Connelly Parkmore now on the farm) were fishing in Garadice lake. The take was bad and they were about to go home when a hairy eel jumped into the boat and immediately jumped out. The eel did this twice and then Philip said if it comes back again I will gaff it with this knife. Then the eel came in again and Philip stuck the knife in it and disappeared. The lake suddenly became muddy looking and father and son dashed for shore. When on land they looked back and saw the lake in foam, and were horrified to see a horseman galloping over the waters towards them. It was dusk as the horseman rode up. He asked young Ketterick to go with him for a short ride promising to leave him back after midnight unharmed. Ketterick a Devil-me-care consented. He soon found himself in a beautiful castle in the lake. After a time an eel with a knife in its side crept into the apartment where Ketterick and the horseman were. The horseman addressed Ketterick thus:-
   "This is my sister who has been enchanted and turned into an eel many years ago, to regain her shape only when a young man daring enough would drive a knife in her side, and withdraw it of his own free
