- (continued from previous page)below Glynn's shop. Mr O Sullivan was the teacher who taught there. He used to teach also in the vestry room in Killoran Chapel. He used to lodge in the houses around the school and he would teach the children their lessons at night where he would stay. The subjects they learned were English, Writing, Arithmetic. They used to sit on the floor or on sods of turf. The scholars paid the master a penny each month. The school was in Springfield Killoran.
- This is a story about an old school which I heard from Martin Murray of Ballinshown, Aughrim, Ballinasloe, Co Galway.
The school I am going to tell about was situated on the side of a road known in this locality as the New Line. It was an old stone Barn with a hole in the roof for the smoke to go through. The teacher's name was Thomas Joseph, and it was to him the teacher John Loughnane, that taught school here about fifty years ago went to school.- Collector
