  1. In the olden times a disease called "heat and cold" was supposed to be cured by extracting blood from the arm, or foot, or chin, or sometimes from the ear of the person. Nowadays such a disease is called "Pleurisy". Doctors are not recommended to cure it but in this locality it can be cured by two people one known by the name Holmes of Lacken and the other Gill of Crossmolina. The patient suffering from this disease would go to the "quack" or, if not strong he would invite him to the house. The quack then would start to work. The blood was put on a saucer. If the blood was black the "quack" would say he sustained
