- Long ago the houses were made of clay and covered with boards outside. The slates are got in Ireland such as Waterford but the blue bangers are got in England. The people used to have beds in near the wall. The names of them are called the hags and they were set into the wall. The fire was set in the middle of the floor and all the smoke went up a hole in the roof. The front of the chimneys were not made of mortar. A lot of people had houses without chimneys and they often heard of a fire in the middle of the floor. There were no windows in the old houses but one door. The floors were made of clay.
