    My father told me that in the old days the way they used to make a hurley was this
    Pick an ash butt with a turn in it then they would get a cow's horn and put it on the end of the stick. In this way they used to make a hurley.
    The way they used to make a [?] slitter was they would get corks off of porter bottles and tie them together with a cord. Then they would get cloth and tie it around the corks then when they would come to the end of the cloth they would sew the cloth together and their slitter was made.
