    People will not give milk away on May day, nor will they throw out ashes from fireplaces.
    Some tie a red ribbon on the tail of a cow that will soon bear a calf. It is thought this is done for good luck.
    Long ago, also on 1st May a blackthorn bush covered with blossoms was pulled up by the roots and set in a garden or field while people played music and danced around it.
