    In olden times all the fires were made of turf or wood. There was no coal burned. There werent much candles burnt in olden times. Rush lights and dips were used. The dips were pieces of wood dipped in tallow. Candles were made in Borris. In the old houses the fowl were kept on the kitchen floor and often animals such as calves and pigs were fed on the kitchen floor.
