    The Land League
    The parish of Kilrush was one of the storm centres of the Land League nearly sixty years ago.
    All along about 1878 to 1880 the rumbling of the coming war was heard every where.
    The tyranny of the landlords had driven the people to desperation and Michael Davitt and Parnell led the way and the people followed. The greatest enthusiasm prevailed everywhere.
    The Landlord's Assocation shouted for from wholesale robbery from the British Government.
    Many people were arrested and imprisoned as suspects including Gregory Murphy, of Kilrush, James Molloy of Corragh, John Byrne of Ballingale and Attarney O Dempsey of Enniscorthy. The British Govt. threatened to keep them in jail indefinately until a Treaty was made and Parnell was released from Kilmainham.
    The local leaders were liberated one by one and received great ovations in their native place.
    Immediately the Land League was suppressed and then to blindfold the authorities a Ladies' Land League was formed. My mother was first president here. This too was suppressed, but the fight went on. They got good support from the county Press and were aided by such patriotic
