- Old Houses
My father told me that the houses were all thatched long ago. The thatch was produced from rushes and straw. Each house had a bed in it which was called a settle bed. This bed was placed in one co[r]ner of the house. There were some old huts or houses which had only one apartment. The fireplace was at the gable wall. There was an old rod chimney and an old barrel on the top for drawing out the smoke. Some windows were not more than nine inches square. Sometimes they had a bag stuffed with hay and straw instead of glass in the windows The floors were made of clay. Half doors were always common in the district.
