  1. Long ago people paid very little money for books for school books compared to what has to be paid nowadays First class books cost one penny Second class books cost twopence and third class ones cost fourpence and fifth class ones cost fivepence.
    When the oldest child of a family went to school his books did the rest of the family in turn as the same books were used year after year The people learned the Poor Mans Catechism and they also had spelling books.
