Henry McGann jumped down of the trap and into the public house there, in which he saw a light.
The Ghost spoke - "You saved your life," said he. "If you came any farther, I would kill you between this and Mullingar (about four miles farther ahead) He then disappeared.
McGann "fainted dead". He did not go to Mullingar that night, but stayed in the public - house, and he was able to finish his journey next day.
Ever afterwards, he was afraid of going anywhere at night, and on no account would he go alone.
