It was believed until quite recent times, that certain people had the 'Evil Eye'...

It was believed until quite recent times, that certain people had the 'Evil Eye, and that anything they looked at would not prosper. My mother tells me, that when she was young there was a man living in her neighbourhood who had the evil eye. One day she saw this man looking at a calf belonging to a certain woman in the locality. The owner of the calf noticed the man's look, and when he passed on, she took a piece of cloth, set it alight at the fire, and then brought out the burning cloth and held it under the beast's nostrils. My mother saw the woman doing this, which was supposed to prevent the evil having any effect.
