    1. People say if a child is born between Xmas Day and New Years' Day that it will always be unfortunate...

    They also say it is unlucky to put out ashes on a Monday. Some people never do it. Certain people would never part with money on New Years' Day. They think if they did so that they would pay out a lot of money during the year. On Hansel Monday (the first Monday of the New Year.) some people would not give away a penny; they would not buy any thing or give charity. But a person sometimes gives a 3d piece or a 6d piece to a friend for luck.
    It is lucky to find a horse shoe on the road, the more nails in it, the more luck. If there is no nail in it, it is considered useless. Sometimes a horse shoe is nailed on the back of the door to bring luck.
    If a person lets a spoon or knife fall when washing delph there is a visitor to the house.
    If a person drops a glove, a companion picks it up, if there is a companion present, to prevent disappointment
