- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)This leather being heavy was used for strong boots, harness, bags and straps. The leather was water proof, and lasted nearly a life time. The purpose of tanning is to stop decomposition and to give hides strength and toughness.
The hides were got from horses and cows. The industry died over fifty years ago.[Drawing] - Map: OLD TANNERYTANNINGUp to about forty or fifty years ago there were a number of small industries in, and around Kells. There were a number of tanyards where splendid leather was made. Candles, soap, nails, spools, baskets, balls, marbles and bricks were made. All these industries have dissappeared.
