  1. The Earls of Darnley were landlords in this district and also owned the town of Athboy. They were not bad, as landlords went, and there were seldom evictions on the estate. They kept a staff of servants in Clifton Lodge Athboy, where they usually came for a month or two about Christmas each year. In 1903 the estate was sold to the tenants since which time they have no connection with the place.
