- (continued from previous page)To cure rheumatism a person should rub the stiff parts with nettles - preferable wet ones. A wet dock-leaf rubbed on a nettle-sting gives relief.
Laurel leaves were used to heal burns. These were roasted and mixed with lard. Then a plaster was made and applied to burns. Wild roses were said to cure the bite of a mad-dog.
As we all know the thorns of the wild-rose tree are turned down. It is said that when the devil was cast out of heaven he attempted to get back there again. He saw a rose-tree with its thorns turned upwards.
