    Carrig o Gunnell
    (Castle Drawing)
    Legend.
Tradition holds that Carriogunnell means Carraig an Coinnil - the rock of the candle but historians tell us that it probably was Carraige o Gunnaing. The Uí Chonaing or "Gunning" were an ancient tribe treibh (?) who inhabited the district near Limerick. Their name also appears in Caisleán Uí Chonaing" Castleconnell near Limerick.
