  1. Holy Well - St. Ciaran's.
    July 1934
St. Ciaran's well is situated on a height in a field in Clonagh. It is about two hundred yards from the road and beside the railway line between Rathkeale and Ardagh. About thirty yards from the well stands the ivy clad ruins of Clonagh old Church, Monastery and Cemetery.
Local tradition says that there is an underground passage from the well to the Church, which was used in days gone by, by the monks and that it is used now by the dead in the cemetery. The last person who is buried ins supposed to be drawing water to all the dead, and is relieved of her duties when the next funeral arrives. The new arrival takes up the duty.
A broken wall surrounds the well , which was built by Mr. Hartigan, father of the present owner of the well land. The well itself is covered with a hood of stone. In a niche near the top is placed a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. At the back of the well is a horse chestnut tree.
