- There was once a candle maker whose name was Damer. He lived near Manister in Co. Limerick. He used to buy large quantities of tallow for making candles. The tallow was usually sold in barrels. It happened once that he bought a number of barrels of tallow and emptying them he found they were full of gold except for a small covering of tallow. He became suddenly rich, a poor neighbour of his who was always unlucky, on hearing of Damer's great fortune he went one day to him and asked him if he knew of any way by which good luck would come to himself. Damer told him to come next day and he would tell him if he ever would have good luck. He came next day and Damer placed before him two measures one full of gold except for a small covering of tallow and the other was full of tallow. He told him to take his choice of the two and if he took the one containing the gold he could keep it. The poor man paused he used to put out his hand sometimes to the one the gold was in and sometimes to the one that contained the tallow. At last he fixed on the one the tallow(continues on next page)
