  1. There was a gentleman who invited a friend to his house. He ordered the cook to roast two chickens. The man went for his visitor and he told the cook he would not be long away. The cook looked out after about half an hour to see if he was coming, but there was no sign of him, so she tasted the chickens to see if they were done and it tasted so sweetly that she kept eating little bits until she had nothing left but the bones. Then she thought she would taste the other one to see if it were done, and as it fared with the first one she ate the other one too until nothing was left for the visitor but the bones. At last the visitor came and knocked at the door. The cook came to see who was there. When she saw who was there she said to him: - "I think you are a very foolish man to come here, this man has plotted to cut off your two legs." When the visitor heard this he turned and ran as quickly as his legs could carry him. At the same time she ran to the man of the house and told him that the visitor was gone with the chickens. The man ran after shouting "I want only one, I want only one," but the visitor ran faster and faster.
