They commenced operations before twelve o'clock but at the midnight hour the ghostly guardian of the treasure appeared, and attacked the two men. Smyth's companion fled, but Smyth being a very brave man defended himself with the sword, and retreated backwards towards Castletownroche his home, over a mile, and a half distant.
He fought her all the way, and kept her out from him with the sword. He arrived at his own house in Castletownroche, went to bed, but was found dead and black in bed next morning., the foxy woman having crushed him against the wall during the night.
There is a place called Árd Chaillichín just near Annesgrove which is supposed to be guarded by a Caillichín. I wonder if the Caillichín of Árd Chaillichín and the Caillichín in charge of the money are one and the same.
I myself remember a man named Best making an unsuccessful attempt to get the buried treasure.- Informant
