to the branches on the opposite side. There were a number of fords along that portion of the river. The principal were, The Gaba's ford of Coolroemore, the knight's ford, near Paddy Connell's cottage, the Glen ford near Denis Cronin's cottage, Bowles's ford near the wooden bridge, the Smith's ford near Con Twomey's house and the Larry's ford near Glen Creamery.
The Smith's ford is not used at all now. The Smith who lived beside it was called Billeen. People came to the forge every night to listen to old stories and to hear the news of the day. It was said that on several occasions they used meet an old hag on the road when they were going home at night. At last they got so frightened that nobody came to the forge. Old Billeen died and the forge became a ruin, but the old hag still lingered about the ford and at last nobody would cross it. There is no trace of her there now.
