  1. (continued from previous page)
he came to a great room with walls and ceilings and floor covered with silver. The blackbird wanted to carry as much of this as he could carry and fly away, but he remembered what the magpie had told him and flew down and down to another room which was almost completely filled with gold. The shining mass was too much for his good intentions and he forgot the magpie's advice. He tried to seize all the gold he could carry. As his beak touched the gold, a black demon suddenly appeared blowing great clouds of smoke from his nostrils. The blackbird is black from the smoke which the demon blew over him. His bill is yellow from the gold which remained on it.
