  1. Long ago there were not many good roads in Ireland. There were several of them made in the time of the famine, as an excuse for getting "relief meal."
    There were several old paths leading across hills, which were very useful as short-cuts. They were very useful when the people were going to mass because they had no other roads. The fences which were on each side of these paths are still to be seen in some places, but they are very few.
